COMMON INTESTINAL PARASITES THAT ARE ZOONOTIC
ZOONOSIS- A diseases that is passed from animals to humans
The two most common parasites that are responsible for zoonotic diseases are roundworms and hookworms. Pets are exposed to intestinal parasites all over the world year round, even in the cleanest environment. The diseases they can cause are:
-Roundworms = Visceral Larva Migrans

One form of VLM, Ocular Larva Migrans, is one of the leading causes of blindness in underdeveloped countries, and in poor, rural areas of the US. It can also lead to mental retardation in children.
- Hookworms = Cutaneous Larva Migrans

Hookworms are transmitted to humans by ingestion or penetration of the skin, making it possible for people to become infected simply by walking barefoot on infected soil. The above picture demonstrates the itchy rash that results.
To lessen your chance of transmitting these parasites you should do the following
1 Have stool checks done on your pet every 6 -12 months.
(Worms are usually not seen with the naked eye. A microscopic exam
is done to look for the eggs of the worm)
