That is why many of us bring our pets in for yearly exams, even when they appear healthy- just to make sure. Our four-legged friends can do a very good job at hiding their sickness or disease. By the time 'they start acting like they don't feel good, it can, in some cases, be too late to treat or cure their problem. That is why prevention is so important! By catching a problem early, we may be able to protect and prolong a good quality of life for our furry companions!
Ultrasound screening is one of many tools that you can use to help detect early stage disease in your cat or dog. With a complete abdominal exam, the ultrasonographer can look at the size and texture of all major organ systems in the abdominal cavity. The liver, kidneys, spleen, GI tract, and urinary bladder are all evaluated to determine if they appear normal or abnormal in your pet, in addition to looking for things such as excess fluid, cysts, or growths that may be present in areas that they shouldn't be.
Do you have a breed in your household that is "known" for something? Have you heard that kidney disease is common in cats, or that retrievers more commonly have splenic disease than other canine breeds? This can be another good reason to get your pet scanned! Making sure that they don't fit into one of these abnormal categories can not only offer you peace of mind, but can again help us detect potential problems early on before they become too big to fix.
