This month’s education topic is senior pet health and wellness. The focus of the veterinary wellness exam changes as our pets age. Many of our senior pet health issues, if addressed early, can be prevented or minimized regarding their impact on quality of life.
Senior pet wellness exams start with a thorough history taking. Questions regarding appetite, water consumption, bathroom habits, changes in vision or hearing, difficulty getting up and moving around are just a few examples. These questions apply whether your pet is a cat, dog, or exotic variety. A complete physical exam can also provide insight for the veterinarian. We can appreciate the subtle changes that occur in the eyes and the condition of your pet’s coat as well as more obvious changes like dental tartar and a heart murmur.
With a few simple and noninvasive tests we can assess the function of major organs like the kidneys and liver, screen for diabetes, check for osteoarthritis, and screen your pet for cancer. With early intervention, many of these conditions can be managed with medication or an appropriate diet change.
