Microchipping your pet as a means of permanent identification has begun to increase in popularity. The technology was originally created for tracking wildlife such as sea turtles. It has been used in companion animals for more than a decade.
The chip is an inert glass capsule, not much larger than a grain of rice, that contains a small transmitter which is read by a scanner. Each chip transmits a unique alphanumeric code. This code is registered to your pet. There are several different brands currently in use. Here at Serenity we use the 24 Hour Pet Watch brand.

The microchip is implanted deep under the skin between the shoulder blades in much the same way that a vaccine is given. It can easily be done in an awake pet, however for small cats and dogs it is more easily done when they are under anesthesia for their spay or neuter. A special scanner is passed over the pet and shows on a screen the number unique to that chip. A registration form is filled out that registers your pet in a national database. Once you fill out the form, we will complete the registration for you.
The great majority of veterinary clinics and animal shelters across the country routinely scan every stray or injured animal that is brought in to see if a chip is present.
To help promote this safe and permanent form of identification that greatly increases the chance of your pet being returned to you if it is lost, we have made it our September special. Download and use the coupon below to receive a discount on having your pet chipped.
