Heartworm is a parasite of both cats and dogs. It is transmitted through the bite of the mosquitoes.

The map shown here is a representation of cases across the country reported by veterinary hospitals. In other words, only cases actually diagnosed by a veterinarian are shown on this map. This implies that the real number of pets with heartworm are higher. That is why it is so important to have your pet tested annually and keep them on preventive medication year round.
Heartworm preventive medication began as a daily medication. Since the 1990's, more effective, and safer, monthly medications have become widely used. They also have the added benefit of being a more complete parasite preventive, rather than just heartworm prevention.
Heartgard
Heartgard was the original monthly preventive. Heartgard Plus, which is shown here, is a popular brand because of its chewy beef formulation. It also has the ability to control both roundworms and hookworms.
